The synergy between mixed species rotational grazing aids in natural balance, reducing or eliminating the need for chemical interventions.

One of the best decisions was to not deworm my sheep at all, and twenty years later, it has led to stronger, more resilient sheep, designed to thrive in my management climate.

  • Educating Others on Large and Small Scale Agriculture

Agriculture is a steep learning curve, but you can overcome hurdles with dedication and the right guidance.

Between speaking engagements, working with established farmers, high school or college students, or consulting with beginners, we are committed to preserving the land for future generations.

Good Fences, Good Soil, Great Sheep

Proper fences, water sources, and rotational grazing are like a well-choreographed dance for our animals and the soil. It will increase your land's utilization by 65%, which increases animal and soil health while providing wildlife habitat, better nutrient utilization, and diminished environmental pollution.

Intentionally curating essential nutrients from native plants becomes the nutritious food for our livestock. The nutrient boost is like a banquet for the helpful microorganisms in your soil, as they feast on it and turn it into more nutrients for your plants – and your sheep.

Hoof Disease: There are two different bacteria that cause hoof disease. One species can only survive for about six days in the soil. The cycle of reinfection is broken by rotating our sheep through pastures.

Two Species, One Goal: The synergy between sheep and cattle on the farm aids in natural deworming, reducing the need for chemical interventions.

The techniques help us maintain or even increase organic matter levels in our pastures, resulting in healthier soil, better forage growth, and, ultimately, higher productivity of our animals.

Proper Nutrition

Providing the highest nutrition is a key strategy we use to reach our goals at McKowen Farm. Nutrition is the key factor for twin and triplet pregnancies.

When you survey your land, you can assess if it provides the nutrition your animals need. If you question whether your land is nurturing your animals to their fullest potential, I’m here to help.

I’ll guide you to information resources to ensure your animals are at their healthiest, and we will work together to optimize their nutrition and pasture management and foster a thriving environment all year long.

An ideal starter flock is three young ewes, one proven stud with proven worm resistance, and an older ewe to teach the lambs what medicinal plants to eat.
